Steps to Rebuild Your Life After Loss: A Simple Guide

September 24, 20254 min read

Losing someone or something dear to you can feel like a tornado just ripped through your life. Everything is upside down, and it’s hard to see where to start picking up the pieces. But guess what? You’re not alone. I’ve been there too, and together, we can navigate this rocky path back to joy and fulfillment.

Step 1: Embrace the Grief (Yes, Really!)

Grief is like an uninvited guest who shows up with a suitcase and refuses to leave. Ignoring it won’t help. In fact, it might just make things worse.

So, what do you do? You embrace it. Allow yourself to feel everything—anger, sadness, confusion. It’s all part of the process. And remember whereever you are with your grief and emotions, it's OK! You are exactly where you need to be right in that moment.

  • Think of grief as a wave: Sometimes it’s a gentle ripple, and sometimes it’s a tsunami. Ride each wave as it comes, knowing that eventually, the sea will calm.

Step 2: Find Your Anchor

When everything feels chaotic, finding something steady can help ground you. It could be:

  • A hobby you love

  • A daily walk in nature

  • Binge-watching your favorite series (no judgment!)

  • Your faith and scriptures

For me, it was relying on my faith and claiming God's promises. For many people, it is journaling. Writing down your thoughts can really help to process them.

What’s your anchor? Maybe it’s knitting quirky scarves or gardening and talking to your plants or cuddling with your fur babies. Whatever it is, hold onto it.

Step 3: Reach Out for Support

You don’t have to go through this alone. Whether it’s friends, family, or support groups, talking about your feelings can lighten the load. Sometimes, just having someone listen makes all the difference.

  • Personal Tip: I remember calling my sister late at night just to cry and vent. She didn’t have any magical solutions, but knowing she was there made me feel less isolated.

Step 4: Set Small Goals

Rebuilding your life isn’t about making huge leaps; it’s about taking small steps forward every day - as you feel ready. Start by setting tiny, achievable goals. Maybe today’s goal is just getting out of bed and showering.

  • Tip: As you accomplish these small goals, you’ll feel more confident tackling bigger challenges. And don't forget to give yourself credit for all the progress you have made!

Step 5: Rediscover Joy

This one might seem tricky when you’re deep in sorrow, but bear with me. Think back to activities that used to bring you joy. Was it:

  • Painting

  • Dancing around your living room

  • Cooking exotic dishes

Start reintroducing these joys bit by bit. It won’t erase the pain, but it will remind you that happiness still exists, waiting for you.

Step 6: Create New Routines

Loss often disrupts our daily routines, adding more stress. Keeping to established routines or sometimes creating new routines can help bring back a sense of normalcy.

For example:

  • Morning coffee followed by meditation

  • Evening walks with uplifting music

Simple rituals like these create structure, allowing moments of peace to gradually emerge over time.

Remember: if a routine you used to have before doesn't feel right anymore, let it go. You do what you need to do at this time to protect your heart and find peace.

Step 7: Seek Help If Needed

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, things still feel overwhelming—and that’s okay! There are professionals like therapists, counselors, or coaches trained to help you navigate through tough times.

  • Remember: Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Coaching can be beneficial to guide and support you down your own unique path of healing! Coaches can often see things that you can't while you are in the darkness of your grief and provide valuable insights and coping strategies to help you heal.

Step 8: Celebrate Progress, No Matter How Small

Lastly, celebrate every bit of progress, no matter how small it may seem.

Did you cook a meal after weeks of not doing so? Take a moment to appreciate that accomplishment because even though the healing may seem to move at a snail's pace - you are healing and that deserves to be recognized!

  • Tip: Each small victory brings you closer to normalcy and a stronger, more resilient you.
